GRAY, DUCTILE AND SPECIALTY IRON ALLOYS

Silicon

Cast iron is essentially an alloy of iron and silicon, with properties controlled by regulation of silicon content, this element is present in considerable amount in all cast irons.

Carbon

Carbon and Silicon are the main alloying elements in cast iron with amounts ranging from 2.1 to 4.0 wt % and 1.0 to 3.0 wt % respectively. Iron alloys with less carbon content are known as steel. Carbon is chiefly responsible for the broad range of mechanical properties attainable in cast iron and steel.

Manganese

Manganese in iron combines with sulfur to produce manganese sulfides. Additional manganese promotes the formation of pearlite and will increase strength and hardness of iron.

Chromium

Chromium is a strong carbide stabilizer in cast iron. Chromium acts to increase strength , hardness, resistance to wear, abrasion, and heat.

Molybdenum

Used in cast iron in amounts up to 1%.It increases brinnel hardness without decreasing machinability. Thus, improved tensile strength, toughness or resistance to impact, also resistance to wear and abrasion.

Inoculants

The role of the inoculant is to produce nuclei in the liquid iron melt which enhance the graphite nucleation at very small under-coolings. This will, in turn, promote the formation of Type A graphite structure in gray cast irons, and a high number of small graphite nodules in ductile cast iron.

Specialty Inoculants

These products are used in certain cases or with unique casting configurations where conventional inoculants, at normal addition rates, will not work.

Magnesium Ferrosilicon

Magnesium ferrosilicon is used in the manufacture of ductile iron. The magnesium promotes the formation of graphite nodules giving the iron its strength and elongation.

Nickel

Used for additional strength, promotes pearlite formations and increases strength of the iron. Also, used in Ni-resist iron applications.

Copper

Promotes the formation of pearlite in ductile iron which leads to higher strength with lower elongations.

Tin

Up to 0.10% stabilizes the pearlite preventing its decomposition to ferrite and graphite. Thus, it increases hardness and improves both strength and resistance to wear.

Titanium

Used in small amounts, titanium is a potent graphitizer and grain refiner in cast iron.
