Southern Bentonite
Southern Bentonite is a calcium based clay that is mined in the southern states of the United States.
Southern Bentonite has been used exclusively in aluminum foundries as it is easily mulled into the sand. It yields high green strengths and low hot strengths aiding in good shakeout. It has also been used in iron and brass foundries with western bentonite at a one third addition rate. This is to in shakeout and green strength development. Southern Bentonite has a low (600 degree) burnout temperature. This increases the dead clay percentage in a sand system.
